How do I notify the DVLA about a sale after a bereavement?

Before selling: Inform the DVLA of the keeper's death

You should notify the DVLA that the registered keeper has passed away, but you don’t need to inform them that the car has been sold until it has been collected and paid for.

You have two options:

  1. Use the 'Tell Us Once' Service: If available in your area, this service informs the DVLA and other government bodies about the death.

  2. Write a Letter to the DVLA: If the above service isn’t available, send a letter that includes:

    • Your relationship to the deceased
    • The date of death
    • Their name, address, and date of birth
    • Their driving licence (if you have it)

    Send your letter to:

After Collection: Inform the DVLA that the Car was Sold

Once the car has been collected and paid for, you must inform the DVLA that it has been sold to a motor trader.

You can either:

  1. Use the 'Tell Us Once' Service: Complete the online transfer on the same day the vehicle is collected and paid for.

  2. Write to the DVLA Sensitive Casework Team: If you choose this option, include the following:

    • The date you sold the vehicle
    • Your relationship to the deceased
    • The date of death
    • The name and address of who should receive any vehicle tax refund
    • The buyer's name and address
